Working at HARRISON architects affords an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with one of the local leaders in the field of residential green architecture and Passive House. Our office is in the Joseph Vance Building, a LEED-Gold-certified building, part of the Architecture 2030 District, in the heart of downtown Seattle several blocks from Seattle’s vibrant Pike Place Market, with easy access to Link Light Rail and many bus lines. The Vance Building has showers and a bike room for bicycle commuters. The office atmosphere is consistent with the values expressed in our manifesto and in our projects, that is: thoughtful, fairly relaxed, and cognizant of the importance of family and friends. Hours are flexible, and time off can usually be arranged for travel or attending to family needs.

Skill and experience with the Mac OS and with a recent version of ArchiCAD are minimum requirements. We use ArchiCAD and BIMx for design, presentation and documentation, and Microsoft Office, Prezi, Lightroom and a bit of Adobe Creative Suite for communication and organization. As Passive House Consultants, we use WUFI Passive, the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) and Graphisoft’s EcoDesigner Star add-on for ArchiCAD to model energy use in buildings. Getting the models into WUFI Passive currently requires SketchUp as well. We run THERM and WUFI Passive on the one office PC. If you have Rhino and Grasshopper knowledge that would be cool, though we have not yet had a project where those tools could be applied.

I expect a lot of the people who work here: excellence, intelligence, and a serious commitment to continued learning and doing good work. We’ve set ourselves a lofty and challenging goal–getting gorgeous green architecture built for our clients for a reasonable construction cost and an appropriate design fee. We need supremely dedicated, talented people to make that happen. I look most favorably on applicants with Passive House Consultant or Sustainable Building Advisor certifications, 5-year Bachelor of Architecture degrees, and experience in residential wood-frame architecture. I am of course prepared to be wowed by different backgrounds and skills, presented with skill and passion. Women and people of color are encouraged to apply.

If it sounds like I’ve been describing you, and work with HARRISON architects interests you, please send me a resume and cover letter. I may not have an opening at the moment, but it’ll be nice to get in touch. I post active job listings on this page when I have them.

I look forward to hearing from you.
